OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU!
One of the primary goals of Student Media is to “Train Future Media Professionals”. Student Media Creative Services (SMCS) is a great example of how students interested in, or majoring in design, photography, illustration, audio/video, printing and other related media fields can apply their skills in a real-life, work environment.
To better understand the type of projects SMCS is involved in please review our Portfolio and Services sections of this website.

REQUIREMENTS for EMPLOYMENT
Our staff is comprised of current ASU students and full-time (ASU Student Media Staff) professionals. All projects are considered contract (or freelance) and are assigned to a designer on that same basis after considering a variety of conditions.
1) Availability
Every student’s academic responsibilties are the priority. Deadlines and project schedules are as critical to each project as one’s class schedules and assignments are to the student. Conflicts with either will usually result in one (or both) not being completed on time or correctly.
2) Personal skill set and experience
Depending on the request, it might involve more proficiency in one area than another (i.e., design and layout, illustration, etc.). Some may require multiple skills and/or multiple people contributing to the overall project. Obviously, a certain level of skill and experience is something we need to consider when accepting those interested in becoming a freelance contractor. (click here for current position descriptions - may be updated periodically)
3) Application proficiency
Strong working knowledge of Adobe’s Creative Suite of products, specifically Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, as well as Video and Multimedia software.
4) Creative Thinking
We realize that's a very hard-to-define concept but one that should be continually pursued nonetheless. Remember... the business is design, but the product is creativity. That's what sets one designer apart from the next.

LEARNING THE PROCESS
Estimating and Client Interaction
It should be understood that there is no guarantee of a regular volume of work or financial benefit. Each job is estimated taking into account both labor (your time) and material costs. This will give you the opportunity to work directly with the client, Account Executive, and Creative Director in estimating time and planning schedules (as time permits).
Time Management
Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines. It's the nature of the business. Depending on the complexity of the assignment there may be several phases (i.e., consultation, proof-of-concept, finalize) to consider and plan for.
